After weeks of consternation between Sen. Thom Tillis and the Trump administration, Tillis voted to confirm Todd Blanche as the next attorney general. On Tuesday, Tillis joined the 11 other Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee in approving Blanche’s nomination on a 12-10 vote. All Democrats opposed. At times, it appeared Blanche would never get confirmed, as Republican senators Tillis of North Carolina and John Cornyn of Texas blocked his confirmation. Their main concern regarded the Trump administration’s $1.776 billion “anti-weaponization” fund. The senators wanted an agreement from Blanche and the White House to stop the use of the fund, which is meant to provide restitution to people who felt they were wrongly targeted for prosecution for political reasons. Trump has said the fund was created for people charged or convicted in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol when his supporters stormed the building to stop the election certification of Trump’s 2020 opponent, President Joe Biden. A vote is still needed by the entire Senate before Blanche can serve in the role. Click the link in our bio to keep reading. ✍️Danielle Battaglia 📹Kevin Keister
